Minor Injury Unit Changes
From Monday 6th May 2024, there will be some changes to the opening hours of our Minor Injury Units at Nevill Hall Hospital and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr.
Following a period of public engagement to seek feedback on the provision of our Minor Injury services, our goal has been to maximise local access to services whilst ensuring we are utilising our resources in the most effective way.
As a result of the public engagement, the Health Board has now introduced the following revised opening times for our Minor Injury Units:

Outside of the opening hours of the Minor Injury Units in Abergavenny, Ystrad Mynach and Ebbw Vale, a 24-hour Minor Injury service remains at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. Additionally, the 111 Wales service can be contacted 24 hours a day for minor injury queries and advice.
Aneurin Bevan University Health Board operates several Minor Injury Units, which treat injuries that are not life or limb threatening. They are led and delivered by specialist-trained Emergency Nurse Practitioners, who can work independently and treat a range of injuries in both adults and children over one year old.
The Minor Injury Units provide an important part of the Health Board’s overall Urgent Care service, with our hospitals configured so that:
- Our Emergency Department at The Grange University Hospital (Cwmbran) provides critical care and emergency treatment, such as for life or limb-threatening illnesses and injuries.
- Our Minor Injury Units at the Royal Gwent Hospital (Newport), Nevill Hall Hospital (Abergavenny), Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr (Ystrad Mynach) and Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan (Ebbw Vale) treat minor injuries, such as broken bones; minor burns; and eye, ear and nose injuries. They do not treat illnesses or life and limb threatening injuries.
Use of our Minor Injury Units varies greatly during their hours of opening - for example, there is very little activity at night, which is why we recently undertook a comprehensive public engagement exercise to ensure we were using our resources in the most efficient way to meet demand. We received valuable feedback from people, and we would like to say thank you to all who contributed and made their views known.
We recognise the concerns expressed by many people and we have taken time to listen, understand and put additional measures in place as a result, such as making sure that information is readily available about all our Urgent Care services and how to get the most benefit from these.
